People’s Choice Award
On Saturday October 8th, the public will select its prize-winner in the photo category.
9.00 am: Looking back at the 2015 People’s Choice Award attributed to the American journalist Heidi Levine for her report “la guerre et la guérison à Gaza”.
The media processing of crises allows to draw attention to the public on the dramas that are the result of underdevelopment and the tensions that come along with it.
Convinced that the work of reporters is as imperative as field actions during times of crises, Oliver Ray, director of the “prevention of crises and end of conflicts” program of the AFD and Charles Enderlin suggest taking the time to exchange with the public of that subject.
This exchange will be followed by the 2016 People’s Choice Award sponsored by the AFD for the fourth year running.

Conference with Reporters without borders
« La Turquie, une guerre qui ne dit pas son nom »
The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is taking his country down an authoritarian spiral and seems committed to a war against journalists. Hundreds of journalists have been sent to court for “insulting the president” or “terrorism”. Self-regulation is advancing as authorities are suspending the access to various websites and have even forbidden a number of subjects. The Syrian conflict and the fight against rebels from the PKK are making the government more paranoid when it comes to the media. Turkey is now ranked 151 th on the World Press Freedom Index according to Reporters Without Borders. Participants : Erol Önderoglu (member of Reports Without Borders. Liberated this past June from a Turkish prison), Chris Huby (photojournalist and documentary film maker banned from entering Turkey), Guillaume Perrier (ex correspondent in Istanbul for le Monde from 2004 to 2014), Christophe Deloire and Johann Bihr (managers of the European section of Reporter Without Borders).
Participants :
Chris Huby (photographe, documentariste)
Guillaume Perrier (journaliste reporter, ancien correspondant du Monde à Istanbul (2014-2014)
Erol Önderoglu (représentant de RSF en Turquie).

Reporter’s Memorial
Unveiling of the Stele for the year 2014-2015
Reporter’s Memorial Tenth anniversary
Ten years ago, the Reporter’s Memorial was inaugurated in Bayeux. Upon the unveiling of the 2015 stele, Reporters Without Borders will gather families and loved ones of the journalists killed on the job in the last ten years.
In 2015, 110 journalists have perished because of their profession or in dubious circumstances. Reporters Without Borders assures that of those 110, 67 have been killed for the sole reason of being journalists. In total, 787 journalists have been killed on the job since 2005. To that number, 27 netizens and 7 media associates can be added. This worrisome situation can be explained by the peak of violence against journalists in the last decade. They are now deliberately targeted and all the efforts put toward their safety have failed so far.
« It is imperative to set up a concrete mechanism for the application of the international law for the protection of journalists », declares Christophe Deloire, General Secretary of Reporters Without Borders. « Today, violent non-state actors have targeted journalists while numerous states do not respect their obligations. More than 800 reporters have been killed in the last ten years. Their death must be met with reactions that match the urgency of the situation. A special representative for the protection of journalists with the United Nation Secretary must be immediately appointed. »
La liberté d’expression et d’information reste la première des libertés et est le fondement de toute démocratie. Reporters sans frontières est la plus vaste organisation internationale de la liberté de la presse, entendue comme droit humain fondamental d’informer et d’être informé.

Amnesty International Round Table: civilians under a reign of terror
2015 has been a particularly terrible year for people who live in zones of conflict. Under international law, civilians are supposed to be protected from the ravages of war, but more than ever, this protection is cruelly lacking.
This meeting will draw up an overview of the situation based on insights and alternative practices. Round table led by Claude Guibal and including Donatella Rovera (Amnesty researcher), Ayman Oghanna (photojournalist), and Aymeric Elluin (Amnesty).

Reporters Memorial
Unveiling of the Stele for 2014 and the beginning of 2015
The stele at the Memorial to Reporters for 2014 and the beginning of 2015 will be officially unveiled in the presence of Christophe Deloire, General Secretary of Reporters Without Borders, and family members and friends of journalists killed in the course of the last year.
Although the number of journalists killed in the course of their work – 71 journalists and 20 netizens – fell slightly, the year 2014 saw the development of a different form of violence, involving ever greater exploitation of atrocities committed against journalists A journalist is no longer a collateral victim or an awkward witness: s/he has become an incarnation of freedom who must be eliminated, a challenge in a battle of ideologies. The killings have thus become more and more barbaric, gruesomely staged in order to gain attention and create sinister propaganda.
The ceremony this year will pay a special tribute to the 12 victims of the attack against the editorial team of Charlie Hebdo. This black day in the history of the world’s press demonstrates the extreme violence which can be meted out to those who dare to criticise - or even simply question - religion. Among the victims were five cartoonists and illustrators who were extremely popular in France, including Cabu, Wolinski and Charb.
The stele will also pay tribute to fifteen Syrian journalists, victims of the civil war which has now been raging for four years. Syria today is the most dangerous country in the world for journalists. They are systematically targeted by Bashar al-Assad’s security forces, by pro-government militias and by jihadist groups including Islamic State. Since March 2011 40 journalists have been killed while carrying out their work in Syria, 13 of them foreigners.
“We continue to mobilise every single day, in the face of murders, kidnappings, imprisonment and censorship, to help both journalists and citizens to achieve their mission of conveying the truth” says Christophe Deloire. “Resolution 2222, supported by Reporters Without Borders and adopted by the United Nations Security Council last May, demonstrates the determination of the international community to secure better protection for journalists in conflict zones. Fighting against impunity, which is too often the case when journalists are assassinated, has to be our top priority”, continued the General Secretary of the organisation.

Multimedia Journalism Workshop 2015
The NOOR-Nikon Multimedia Journalism Workshop is open to young and aspiring documentary photographers and filmmakers, including those intending to work in conflict zones and photographers interested in learning how to apply their still photography skills to filmmaking and multimedia.
KEY DATES
Workshop: 7–10 October 2015
Date limite d’inscription: Sunday, 16 August 2015
Notification de sélection: Tuesday 1 September 2015
THE WORKSHOP
During the intensive three-day workshop, ten selected participants, together with NOOR photographers Sebastiàn Liste and Andrea Bruce will share experiences and expertise on how to pick up, develop, and produce stories covering conflict and human rights issues for multimedia productions. Subjects covered will include: preproduction, research, logistics, access, safety, equipment for filmmaking and sound, camera movement, lighting, audio, interviewing, filming techniques, and shooting for editing.
Drawing from their own experiences, Sebastiàn and Andrea will discuss the motivations, challenges, and possibilities of integrating still photography and video into visual storytelling methods. This workshop will be a unique opportunity to gain new knowledge and contacts in an intimate and interactive environment, while learning how to produce impactful multimedia.
THE MENTORS
Sebastiàn Liste(Spain) is a documentary photographer devoted to covering contemporary issues and profound cultural changes in Latin America and the Mediterranean regions. He specializes in long-term, in-depth projects, like “Urban Quilombo”, documenting extreme living conditions faced by dozens of families in an abandoned chocolate factory in Brazil. Through visual journalism he aims to generate dialogue and collaboration between subjects and audiences, bringing different worldviews into confrontation with each other.
Andrea Bruce (USA) is a documentary photographer who brings attention to people living in the aftermath of war. She concentrates on the social issues that are sometimes ignored and often ignited in war's wake. The past ten years she chronicled the world's most troubled areas, focusing on Iraq and Afghanistan. Andrea started working in Iraq in 2003, following the intricacies and obstacles of the conflict experienced by Iraqis and the US military. For eight years she worked as a staff photographer for The Washington Post and later as part of the VII Network (2010-2011). Her awards include top honors from the White House News Photographers Association (where she has been named Photographer of the Year four times), several awards from the International Pictures of the Year contest, and the prestigious John Faber Award from the Overseas Press Club in New York.
Organized with the generous support of Nikon France.
